All about our keynote speaker, Sandra Yee Ichiho
Sandra Yee Ichiho studied Architecture at the School of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley. Upon graduation, Sandra filled her "Box of Life" with dreams for her future. Nowhere in that "Box of Life" was the dream of managing construction projects for one of the top commercial general contractors in the country.
Sandra thought she was leaving architecture for just a couple of years to get some experience out in the field and make herself a smarter Architect. She had no idea that she would fall in love with the dynamic atmosphere of the construction industry and never return to being a design consultant. Growing up in an industry that is male dominated and in a company with strong roots in the Midwest, Ms. Ichiho has managed to carve a great career despite being a woman and a minority. Some of the projects she has worked on include Paradise Pier at Disney's California Adventure, The St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort, and several science and engineering research laboratories at the University of California, Irvine.
Ms. Ichiho has been with Hensel Phelps Construction Co. for the past twelve years. Along with managing projects, she is active in the company's Diversity Advisory Team and W-Net or Women's Network. She recently headed up the company's third Women's Leadership Seminar which focused on teaching the women of Hensel Phelps the importance of empowerment, mentorship and networking. She is also active in the recruiting efforts for Hensel Phelps because that is where building a diverse company begins.
Sandra has a degree in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley and a degree in Building Construction from the University of Washington. Ms. Ichiho is a licensed Architect in the State of California. She lives in Orange County, California, is married and has two young children. Her daughter often asks her what it is like to be the only girl at work.
